Introduction

The Bulk Export function allows you to select a report and export it to a delimited text file.

With this function, we can retrieve the results of large volumes of data without having to load the data into memory.

The Bulk Export function improves data extraction for end-users, in terms of resources used, execution time, and avoiding errors related to the large volume of data.

Prerequisites:

1. Database and tablespace considerations

a. To use Bulk Export, the project must have the ability to save temporary tables in the database.

b. In addition, since the results are temporarily stored in the database, it will be necessary to have enough space in the Tablespace of the database to temporarily store the information.

c. The specific space required will depend on the number of rows, columns, and type of data returned by the report, but should be taken into account when enabling the Bulk Export functionality.

2. Considerations on access to shared folders

a. Saving the generated files to a shared folder requires that the Intelligence Server has connectivity to that shared folder.

b. The user must ensure that the MicroStrategy service account has written access to the shared folder.

3. MicroStrategy Licensing and Privilege Considerations

a. In order for users to create/configure Bulk Export reports, it is necessary to log in through MicroStrategy Developer with an Architect license in order to configure the report.

b. For users to run Bulk Export reports, they need to log in via MicroStrategy Web with a Power User Web license (Consumer Web to be confirmed).

Settings

To configure a Bulk Export report we have to open the report in edit mode in MicroStrategy Developer and select “Configure Bulk Export” in the “Data” menu.

In the Bulk Export configuration, we are interested in choosing the delimiter of the exported file.

Once saved the file will change to the “Non-interactive” type.

To consume/export the report configured in Bulk Export, we will have to access MicroStrategy Web and run the report, being able to configure the subscription where we will define in which folder we want to export it and at what time.

Once the subscription is executed, we can go to the folder we have defined and find the file. This resulting file will be a text file.

Conclusion

The Bulk Export tool gives us the ability to take large volumes of data, process and size them using the facilities provided by MicroStrategy and then export them, and then use them in other tools or share them easily and quickly.

This functionality undoubtedly speeds up a process that can be long, tedious, and complicated, in addition to freeing up the Intelligence Server by avoiding loading data already processed in memory.
